People You Should Know: Dave Winer

March 4th, 2008 | by Brad King |

There are people in the tech world who have reputations, and then there people who have Reputations. Dave Winer is definitely the latter.

He is one of the many folks responsible for the syndication, Read/Write phenomenon going on these days. He helped push RSS, CMS and blogging tools in the Web world. Those three software tools have allowed the non-techie types to easily create content for the Web and share it amongst friends without forcing people to surf around or bookmark everything (which is good, because my RSS Reader right now has about 150 RSS feeds in it).

His blog Scripting News has been online for 11 years, which clearly establishes him in the “early adopter” category. (A future People You Should Know will focus on the this guy, who has Winer beat by 3 years — read ahead)

Throughout the years, he’s rubbed some folks the wrong way — but who among us can’t say the same thing (alright, who among ME can’t say the same thing). Despite that, it’s impossible to argue that our Read/Write world would look the same without Winer’s contribution (which continues with social media as well) and innovation.
