GPS Phones Soon to be the Norm
March 9th, 2008 | by Brad King |There’s been a smattering of talk at SXSW about mobile devices, but I suspect that next year we’ll be hearing much more. The reason: when mobile computing gets geo-location chips — as most companies believe will happen next year — suddenly the flow of information gets very interesting.
When phones track everything by location, expect the interactive, mobile maps to become a standard part of how we consume information.
Combining social networking and GPS means users can take photos, upload and tag them on a map on the move, as well as locating friends in a network via GPS.
I’ve made the argument that newspapers need to consider themselves first and foremost a data collection agency. Nowhere is this more important than with the move towards location-based computing, which will rely on metadata.
