Most Don’t Worry About Online Identity

The Pew Internet and American Life research group just released a report that found a majority of Americans aren’t concerned about the private information that they post online. You can find the report here:

Digital Footprints: Online Identity Management and Search in the Age of Transparency

There’s too much for me to describe here, but it’s clear that we are uploading more content to the Web, tagging that data and increasingly adding our own “signature” which can be followed.

The study is filled with tidbits of information that are frankly quite shocking even to someone who spends all of their time online. To wit:

  • One-in-ten internet users have a job that requires them to self-promote or market their name online.
  • More than half of all adult internet users have used a search engine to follow others’ footprints.
