International News Website Launches

March 17th, 2008 | by Brad King |

This sent along from Chris Graves at The Cincinnati Enquirer. There’s a new website launching that will cover global news. Of course, it’s funny that they don’t list the URL — but I guess that’s just an oversight.

A group of veteran foreign correspondents, including The Boston Globe’s Charles M. Sennott and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Matthew McAllester, will be joining Global News Enterprises LLC, the first US-based website devoted exclusively to international news, which is set to launch early next year.

On the heels of the State of the Media report today that found foreign and international reporting dominates news coverage, I find it curious to see how this venture plays out. If it becomes wildly successful, will it become a syndication service? How can it compete with Reuters and the Associated Press? What will the distribution and ad models look like?

There are more questions for me than answers right now, but a well-focused, well written site with excellent distribution and social media technologies could be wildly successful.
